What’s The BUHZ?

BUHZ Bites are sustainably-sourced dog treats, formulated with a blend of sustainable insect protein, made with organic and all-natural ingredients, without any artificial colors or preservatives. These treats are great for your furry friends, but also support sustainable farming practices. In addition, our ingredients are sourced from local and minority farmers, and even have Brooklyn-inspired names for the 4 flavor varieties (the Rogers, Clarkson, Flatbush and Lenox) to further build and reflect our commitment to supporting communities and elevating diversity and inclusion.

  • Greenhouse gas emissions have been on the rise for decades all over the world.  Some of the contributing factors are the increase in agricultural land use, water consumption and livestock production.

The use of alternative protein sources can provide both nutritionally viable and environmentally responsible solutions for you and your pet.  The BUHZ Bites line of treats are comprised of a proprietary Black Soldier Fly larvae protein powder blend, powered by Oberland Agriscience, BUHZ Bites are rich in protein, highly digestible, loaded with amino acids (helps support a healthy skin & coat), has higher calcium content than milk, and the farming production required for black soldier fly larvae has a drastically lower impact on the environment, so your pet gets to enjoy a delicious treat, while helping to lower greenhouse gas emissions - it’s a win-win!

    • Tremendous protein source

    • Highly Digestible

    • Rich in Amino Fatty Acids

    • Rich in copper, iron, b vitamins, manganese, phosphorus, selenium and zinc

  • Greenhouse gas Emissions

A large proportion of global greenhouse gas emissions can be traced back to the production of food made from animals. The production of 1 kilogram of beef protein causes up to 175 kilograms (or approximately 385lbs) of greenhouse gases. The production of 1 kilogram of insect protein results in just 14 kilograms (or approximately 30lbs).

    Less Water Consumption

Insects are very efficient when it comes to water and land consumption - they require far less water than animals like cattle, poultry or pigs because insects are much more resistant to water shortages. Insects drink very little in the first place and do not lose much water through their skin and respiratory system. The 'water footprint' of 1kg of beef is approximately 15,000 liters of water, while the equivalent for 1kg of insects is just 4,000 liters.

Less Land Use + Higher Yields

The land consumption needed to produce 1kg of beef protein is 10x higher than the amount of land needed to produce 1kg insect protein. In regards to BUHZ Bites and the Black Soldier Fly, less than half a hectare (approx. 1.24 acres) of Black Soldier Flies can produce more protein than cattle grazing on 1200 hectares (approx. 2965 acres of land).

As a whole, insect farming and the production of insect protein provides a significantly more environmentally friendly option for food than conventional farming practices. It has the potential to provide long-term solutions for global food shortages, while serving as a nutritionally-sound AND environmentally friendly protein source for pets and humans alike!
